THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN -- TEST 1
Disney has the Spider-Man film franchise locked up, but I want my freshmen to take a crack at breaking into Marvel Comics writing circle, the proving ground for all the future screenwriters pulling down six-figure paychecks for using the nether regions of their imagination. Plus nothing is more fun then comparing 60s Spider-Man to Nolan's Batman. The first thing we do is to go through Spider-Man's origin in Amazing Fantasy 15, which was handed out to the students on the first day of class. After comparing and contrasting, we then move on to our first lesson, Amazing Spider-Man #1. Our mission everyday is go over the story and pull material that we can use in our own story. By the end of the class, we plan to settle on the villain, or villains, we plan to use in the first installment of our own Spider-Man trilogy.
Debuting in 1962, Spider-Man is intro'd in the same year as the first James Bond film, the death of Marylyn Monroe, the birth of Axl Rose and the Bay of Pigs Invasion. What was considered a quick try out story in a soon to be cancelled publication set off a new wave of superhero storytelling.
That all changed as The Amazing Spider-Man 1 hit the newsstands in Spring 1963. Before starting the lesson it's always fun to drop a couple of factoids from the year of publication as a way of comparing the age of the tale with events from US, World and entertainment history as a reference and comparison for the students. Spring 1963 gave us the debut of the Mona Lisa on American shores, the first Viet Cong victory in the oncoming bloodbath about to take place in Southeast Asia, Governor George Wallace preaching for segregation forever in Alabama, the Beatles first album and the closing of Alcatraz prison in San Fran.
