Amazing Spider-Man 7 -- Return of The Vulture -- Angry & Upgraded

Christmas 1964 -- In the aftermath of JFK's murder, test pilot Chuck Yeager nearly flies into space before crashing and Beatlemania officially takes over America.  With all this going on in our great country at the time, it's a wonder The Vulture was able to escape to once again do battle with Spider-Man.

Ever since their aerial battle which ended in The Vulture's arrest, old man Adrian Tombes has been the model inmate in prison, kissing enough butt and displaying such good behavior to earn his way to being a worker in the prison machine shop.  There he uses his knowledge of science and magnetism to create a new device which will enable him to fly over the prison walls and onto to sweet freedom.

Hearing the news while running around in gym class, Peter immediately cuts out of school to head home and chance into his Spider-Man gear to after the escaped felon.  Spider-Man fastens the anti-magnetic inverter he used to beat The Vulture last time to his web shooter, arrogantly believing he will easily triumph over the villain once again.

With The Vulture up to his old tricks ripping off jewelers and flying circles around police helicopters, Spider-Man hoists himself into the heart of battle ready to take down his foe.  Little to Spider-Man's knowledge, The Vulture has already modified his wings to change
magnetic poles instantly, thus defeating the effects of his anti-magnetic inverter.  Before he realizes his opponent has upgraded, Vulture hits Spider-Man with a vicious knockout blow and tosses the web slinger off the side of building, breaking Spidey's arm in the process.

While Spider-Man retreats and regroups, The Vulture heads back to his old hideout, a silo on a farm in rural Staten Island (my hometown woohoo!) and plots his next big score, heisting the payrolls from The Daily Bugle and NOW Magazine.  While Peter is at Jameson's office, Betty Brant is fawning all over him and his cast when The Vulture makes his move.

While Jameson verbally battles The Vulture over giving up his money, Spider-Man shoots his arm up into a sling and changes into Spiderm-Man as the two brawl all over the office and eventually all over the building, ultimately ending up in the largely dangerous Press Room with all the giant rollers and heavy machinery, basically the 60s version of a Hell in the Cell match.

After battling all over The Bugle, Vulture finally gets the upper hand on Spidey and soars out the window and up into oblivion as he tries to shake Spider-Man off and drop him down to road pizza status.  Spider-Man is all wisecracks and quips while he lets The Vulture think he has
the upper hand, then when they are high above the Manhattan skyline, Spidey webs Vultures wings together, rendering him powerless and sending the two of them plummeting for Earth.  Using his mastery of science and sculpture, Spidey shoots up a giant webbed parachute and floats down to salvation while dropping old man green
back into the hands of the police.

Back at the Bugle, Jameson curses the returning Spider-Man for destroying his office and vows to learn his secret identity and destroy his life.  Spidey answers by blasting Jameson in the mouth with a glob of web fluid and silences the maniacal media mouth for at least an hour.  Changing into his civilian clothes Peter reenters the Daily Bugle and shares a sweet romantic moment with Betty Brant, who was hiding from The Vulture's attack.  This ending helps me put over the idea to the class that sexy secretary Betty Brant should be the initial love interest for Peter Parker/Spider-Man in our master class script The Arach-Knight Begins.  Yet another lesson in the books for Comics in the Classroom.
